Pope Francis releases the theme of his message for the 57th World Day of Peace, and calls for open dialogue on the topic of artificial intelligence which is “endowed with disruptive possibilities and ambivalent effects.”

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development released a statement on Tuesday, August 8, presenting the next Message of the World Day of Peace’s theme, which will touch on “Artificial Intelligence and Peace.”\

Open dialogue

The press release noted the “remarkable advances made in the field of artificial intelligence” and how they “are having a rapidly increasing impact on human activity, personal and social life, politics and the economy.”

In this context, Pope Francis will call “for an open dialogue on the meaning of these new technologies, endowed with disruptive possibilities and ambivalent effects.”

The Holy Father is going to stress the importance to be “vigilant” while working “so that a logic of violence and discrimination does not take root in the production and use of such devices, at the expense of the most fragile and excluded,” as “injustice and inequalities fuel conflicts and antagonisms.”

At the service of humanity

The Message will also touch on the impelling “need to orient the concept and use of artificial intelligence in a responsible way,” aiming “at having it at the service of humanity and the protection of our common home.”

This will not be possible without extending “that ethical reflection” to the fields of “education and law.”

The statement concluded by stating how “the protection of the dignity of the person, and concern for a fraternity effectively open to the entire human family,” represent “indispensable conditions for technological development to help contribute to the promotion of justice and peace in the world.”

World Day of Peace

Every January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, the Church celebrates the World Day of Peace. The recurrence was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967, instituting a long tradition of messages from the Holy Father exhorting all people to reflect on important subjects in relation to the work of building peace.

The latest message, which marked the 56th World Day of Peace, was entitled “No one can be saved alone. Combatting Covid-19 together, embarking together on paths of peace.”

In the text, Pope Francis invited the global community to “think in terms of the common good, recognizing that we belong to a greater community, and opening our minds and hearts to universal human fraternity,” hoping for a shared and serious commitment to pursue “a good that is truly common.”

Vatican announces that artificial intelligence will be theme of next World Day of Peace

The Vatican announced Tuesday that Pope Francis’ annual peace message for 2024 will focus on artificial intelligence (AI).

A statement from the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development on Aug. 8 described an “urgent need” to guide the development and use of artificial intelligence in a responsible way, requiring that “ethical reflection be extended to the sphere of education and law.”

“Pope Francis calls for an open dialogue on the meaning of these new technologies, endowed with disruptive possibilities and ambivalent effects,” it said.

The Vatican office noted that artificial intelligence technologies are having “a rapidly increasing impact on human activity, personal and social life, politics and the economy” and called for vigilance to ensure that technological development contributes to “the promotion of justice and peace in the world.”

Years before the widely-popular release of the GPT-4 chatbot system, developed by the San Francisco start-up OpenAI, the Vatican was already heavily involved in the conversation of artificial intelligence ethics, hosting high-level discussions with scientists and tech executives on the ethics of artificial intelligence in 2016 and 2020.

Pope Francis has repeatedly called for making “the intrinsic dignity of every man and every woman the key criterion in evaluating emerging technologies.”

Last month, the Vatican’s education and culture office published an introduction to a 140-page ethics handbook for the tech industry published by the Institute for Technology, Ethics, and Culture (ITEC) at California’s Santa Clara University.

The World Day of Peace — instituted by St. Paul VI in 1968 — is celebrated each year on Jan. 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The pope provides a message for the occasion, which is sent by the Vatican to foreign governments around the world.

In last year’s message for the World Day of Peace, Pope Francis asked: “What did we learn from the pandemic?”

“Artificial Intelligence and Peace,” will be the official theme of the 2024 World Day of Peace. The pope’s message is expected to be released publicly in early December.

Pope’s peace day message to focus on ethical concerns over AI

Signalling the Vatican’s growing engagement in efforts to ensure the ethical development of new technologies, the Vatican has announced that “Artificial Intelligence and Peace” will be the theme for the next World Day of Peace, which is scheduled for Jan. 1, 2024.

“The remarkable advances made in the field of artificial intelligence are having a rapidly increasing impact on human activity, personal and social life, politics and the economy,” the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development said in a statement released Aug. 8.

“Pope Francis calls for an open dialogue on the meaning of these new technologies, endowed with disruptive possibilities and ambivalent effects,” the statement said.

The pope, it continued, “recalls the need to be vigilant and to work so that a logic of violence and discrimination does not take root in the production and use of such devices, at the expense of the most fragile and excluded; injustice and inequalities fuel conflicts and antagonisms.”

The World Day of Peace was inaugurated by St. Paul VI in 1968 and is celebrated every Jan. 1, the feast of Mary, Mother of God. In recent editions, Francis has used the world day to call for inclusive ways of overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic, creating dialogue between generations, promoting a culture of care and ecological conversion.
