55th World Day of Peace

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS – 1 JANUARY 2022

Dialogue Between Generations, Education and Work: Tools for Building Lasting Peace

1. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace” (Is 52:7).

The words of the prophet Isaiah speak of consolation; they voice the sigh of relief of a people in exile, weary of violence and oppression, exposed to indignity and death. The prophet Baruch had wondered: “Why is it, O Israel, why is it that you are in the land of your enemies, that you are growing old in a foreign country, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are counted among those in Hades?” (3:10-11). For the people of Israel, the coming of the messenger of peace meant the promise of a rebirth from the rubble of history, the beginning of a bright future.

2022 World Peace Day message: Pope Francis calls for investment in education, not weaponry

Pope Francis called for more investment in education and less in weaponry in his 2022 World Peace Day message, released Tuesday.

In the message published Dec. 21, the pope said the world had witnessed a “significant reduction” in education funding in recent years, while military spending had soared beyond Cold War levels.

“It is high time, then, that governments develop economic policies aimed at inverting the proportion of public funds spent on education and on weaponry,” he wrote in the message, signed on Dec. 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

The World Day of Peace — instituted by St. Paul VI in 1968 — is celebrated each year on Jan. 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The pope provides a message for the occasion, which is sent to foreign ministers around the world.

World Day of Peace 2022: Quote Images

The World Day of Peace is celebrated on the first of January every year. The Pope sends out a particular message for the day and in 2022, Pope Francis has chosen to focus on three paths to peace: dialogue between the generations, education and teaching, and work as a means to realise human dignity.

The ACBC Office for Justice, Ecology and Peace have created a discussion guide and quote images for individuals or groups in a parish, school, diocese or organisational setting.

You can use these images in prayers, as reflections or impetus for a meditation, or even in your social media or PowerPoints.

World Day of Prayer for Peace 2022

Every year on January 1, the Pope marks the World Day of Prayer for Peace with a special message inviting all people to reflect on the important work of building peace. The World Day of Prayer for Peace, which is also the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, was established by Pope Paul VI in his December 1967 message and celebrated for the first time in January 1968.

Pope Francis said: “Life today is governed by war, by enmity, by many things that are destructive. We want peace. It is a gift.”
